I did a clean burn after my last smoke last weekend. It had been far too long since I did that. There was tons of ash, soot, oil, grease…I didn’t go crazy hot this time, limited to about 1000°…and it burned off most everything. It did kill my gasket, so I went with another Rutland. These have always lasted longer than the felt type, even the Lava Lock type. You just smear on the fireplace epoxy, then lay down the woven gasket material, and trim to size.

Plate setter needs Jesus, or hell fire not sure. Is it steel?
I am about to replace my gaskets with Rutland. Are you supposed to keep the top gasket or just have the rutland one on the bottom?
What is that attached to the grate on the left?
The cast iron plate setter is THE best investment I’ve made. The second is the kick ash basket. My egg is at least 20 – 25 yrs old. I bought it REALLY used about 15 yrs ago. It needs a new hinge system, I’ve replaced the firebox and I’m still using the old daisy wheel cap. This thing is a buy-it-for-life item.
What diameter Rutland did you use?
Does the Rutland seal well if you egg lid has a bit of underbite? Mine is about 10-yr old, need to replace gasket this spring and this looks like it could do the part.
My Rutland gasket looks different. Do they make different styles? Mine was white and more like the original. Yours looks different
