Genuinely amazed at how I managed this, but my puck decided it had enough of my basket and my failures in the learning process (I just recently got a Gaggia Classic Pro for my first machine). Thankfully, it came off mostly in one piece, but I'm hoping this isn't a common occurrence. I'm also thinking the 3 way valve just got a little too excited and caused a slight vacuum at the end, but I'm not sure.

It’s the 3-way. You may want to check to see if you have enough coffee in your basket by doing a ‘coin test.’

Wait. Let me try this. I think this is what I’m missing 😆

Have this issue on my bambino plus. The 3-way evacuates the water and causes a vacuum. If I empty the portafilter right after pulling the shot, it comes out normally, but if I wait till after steaming the milk or something, it gets stuck like this half the time.

how I imagine that puck leaving the portafilter…

This used to happen to me all the time, I would just get a puck screen they’re like $10 and will make it never happen again

This happened to me when I switched to the nanotech shower screen. It’s supposed to do the opposite.

If that happens, an easy solution is to plug the portafilter in again and pull a shot for a brief period, e.g. a second or 2, stopping before liquid results, which can be enough to get the puck to plop on down back into the portafilter.

First time this happened to me (Breville) I was so confused when I looked down at my empty portafilter when I went to knock out the puck

This happens to me using a puck screen on my bambino (no 3way).

If I leave a puck in over night this can happen. I just got in the habit of running some water through it before I take the portafilter off.

  11. The first time it happened I thought I was going crazy at first.

Always move the your cup out of the way before removing the portafilter. First time this happened to be, in the time it took me to think “hey, that’s weird”, the puck dropped right into my drink.

  13. This happens to me whenever I don’t use a puck screen

Usually it’s just user error, portafilter not seated fully or you didn’t lock it in properly. Could also be channeling issues causing uneven pressure.

With a GCP, make sure you’re locking the portafilter in with a firm twist until it clicks. Also, don’t lock it in under pressure, do it before you start the shot.

I would always twist the PF and switch a single very quick on/off after each shot just to avoid this happening. You get a slightly wet puck but don’t have to worry about this ever again.

Happens to me every time with my BBE if I don’t dump it right away

Seems Bambino is a common theme here.

I use a screen filter because of this, and it prevents it from happening *for double shot basket*.

It still happens *every time* I use the single shot basket even with a screen filter, which makes the screen filter a necessity.
