RALSTON, Neb. —

Students across Ralston Public Schools traded their classrooms for the kitchen Thursday afternoon during the district’s annual Kid Culinary Competition.

The event, hosted by the district’s food service department, allowed students of all ages to create dishes for a panel of judges at Ralston High School.

“It’s actually three competitions happening at the same time because we have elementary school, middle school and high school,” said Judy Stoysich Kyle, food service director for Ralston Public Schools.

Each group faced a different challenge. Elementary students created healthy snacks, while middle school teams prepared breakfast dishes and high school students cooked full meals.

Judges evaluated the dishes based on several factors, including taste, appearance and whether students followed nutritional guidelines.

“Taste is number one, appearance, how well they meet the guidelines, those are the kinds of things they’re looking at,” Stoysich Kyle said.

One team competing in the high school division prepared teriyaki chicken with zucchini, mushrooms and rice, paired with a peach and strawberry smoothie made with Greek yogurt.

Students said their love of cooking started at a young age.

“I’ve always been in the kitchen with my mom, and that really got me into cooking,” one student competitor said.

Organizers say the competition is designed to encourage creativity in the kitchen while also teaching students about healthy eating.

“This is a lot of fun for the kids, and the parents enjoy it,” Stoysich Kyle said. “It’s just really good for all the kids.”

Winners received prizes, and in the middle school category, the winning breakfast dish will later be served to students in the school cafeteria.
