In recent months, Carnival Cruise Line has rolled out several changes that have sparked conversation among cruisers. Late last year, the cruise line was applauded after expanding its adults-only SEA cruises for 2026. But not every update has been as well-received. Just last month, Carnival faced backlash after introducing a fleetwide $1 million daily lottery program.
Now, the cruise line has introduced another change to their onboard experience, rolling out an express dining option that promises guests a full multi-course meal in the main dining room in under an hour. Reactions are mixed, with some cruisers excited about the faster service while others say it misses the point of vacation.
Here’s what Carnival’s new Express Dining option includes, why some guests are skeptical, and how it fits into the cruise line’s broader dining strategy.
Carnival Cruise Line Rolls Out Express Dining That Promises A Full Meal In Under An Hour
Carnival Cruise Line’s new dining option, Express Dining, is designed for guests who want a faster meal without skipping the main dining room experience. First piloted on Carnival Vista last year, the option proved successful, according to Carnival Cruise Line president Christine Duffy.
“Our pilot program generated positive feedback from our guests. With this in mind, we are excited to expand Express Dining to offer them the same high-quality dishes and attentive service our dining rooms are known for, while giving guests the ability to use more of their time to enjoy all the other onboard fun,” said Duffy in a news release.
Guests who choose Express Dining can expect a multi-course dinner that can be completed in under an hour—much faster than traditional service, which can take up to 90 minutes, according to passengers online. However, Carnival says the menu will closely resemble the main dining room offerings, with a slightly smaller selection. Additionally, the option is limited to groups of six guests or fewer.

Currently, the option is available on 15 ships, but Carnival plans to expand it to the rest of the fleet by the end of May.

But while the new option may appeal to guests who want a quicker dinner, not everyone is convinced it improves the inherent cruise experience.
Cruisers Are Divided On Whether Faster Dining Improves Or Ruins The Experience

Several cruisers online say the concept sounds too similar to grabbing food at the buffet and worry that a shortened experience could mean fewer menu choices. Others say the appeal of cruising has always been the chance to leisurely enjoy multiple courses while having conversations with family and friends.
However, not all reactions have been negative. Cruisers who have already tried the Express Dining option say they enjoyed it, noting that the quicker service felt more efficient without sacrificing quality.
“We did this one night on our last cruise and absolutely loved it! We were in a smaller, more private dining room, which allowed us to have great conversations with each other and with the staff. They were amazing!! The food came out quickly and was actually hot!!” wrote one commenter.
While Express Dining focuses on speeding up dinner service, Carnival has already been testing similar ideas earlier in the day.

Express Dining is part of Carnival’s broader push to offer more flexibility around onboard dining. Last year, the cruise line rolled out Family Express lunch service on the Lido Deck after first introducing it on Carnival Vista.
Carnival brand ambassador John Heald shared example menus on Facebook showing how the buffet-style setup is organized. The lineup features a mix of kid-friendly comfort foods, including chicken tenders, hot dogs, mac and cheese, smash burgers, salmon croquettes, and cookies.
The response to the Family Express service has largely been positive on Reddit. Parents with small children say the simplified menu makes it easier to find meals that picky eaters will actually enjoy, while others noted that they were pleasantly surprised by the options available for both children and adults.
“My picky eater son will be happy about this.”
“We’re on the Breeze right now, and this line has a good variety of kid and adult items.”
With the success of Family Express lunch and the rollout of Express Dining, Carnival appears to be leaning into the idea that guests want more control over how they spend their time onboard. Whether the concept will prove successful among a wider range of cruisers, though, remains to be seen.
