I have officially tried sushi! It’s…interesting

It definitely has that fresh, non-fishy taste, but it also tastes mildly like plastic, or ozone? Very well put together, but I was REALLY struggling to not gag after a couple of rolls

Maybe I just need to try it again sometime, or try a different kind? Definitely a good experience but I’m not too sure if it’s something I’d try again

try tuna it’s so much better than salmon

Where did you get it from? That looks like the style of tray from my local grocery store. Not the best, but not awful. The rice typically tastes “not quite great” if you catch my drift.

Find a well recommended, mid tier place and have a sit down meal. If the raw fish weirds you out, try a shrimp tempura, spider (fried soft shell crab) or bbq’d/grilled eel roll.

If you’re not a raw person, I would definitely go for something cooked and or fried

Quite a lot what makes sushi good is the precise balance of flavors. The umami of the fish, the slight sweetness and acidity of the rice,  saltiness and umami of the soy sauce. A place that delivers the right ratios of fish/rice, and that provides high quality rice and soy is nearly as important as good fish imo. As others said, these look very rice heavy. Did you have them with soy too?

That being said, the first time I had sushi I didn’t like it. Then one day it just kinda clicked and suddenly I was hooked.

I think this is a great starting roll. If you want to try and compare restaurants around you, you can always order rolls like salmon-avocado. Other good starting rolls are dynamite rolls, tuna avocado, and spicy salmon or tuna rolls.

If you’re warming up to it, try a roll with something cooked, e.g. crab (california roll) or prawn are always served pre cooked.

On the other hand, if you’re feeling brave, try sashimi with a tiny dip in soy sauce. Because it’s “just the fish” it is always going to be good 🙂

Im so amazed/flabbergasted by people that can go that long without ever having tried any sushi? Just curious how old you are and where you live?

I’ll have to commandeer that sushi for my own consumption.

Salmon avocado is honestly one of the best beginner rolls. If you didn’t love it yet, it might just take a couple tries to get used to the texture.

I love sushi and eat it regularly but I do remember my first time and the texture was slightly gag inducing. So strange now.

Someone needs to go to Tokyo.

kyubey sushi tokyo. But schedule in advance. Will be about 100$ for a chefs choice. Not rolls. Nigiri.

It was a sushi ruining experience for me. Because each bite just got better than the next. And icarus flew a little too close to the sushi sun. Got my sushi wings burnt off. My wife doesn’t like uni. Sea urchin. Whatever they are making. Remarkable.

Go to the source. Maybe you don’t like seaweed.

That looks like grocery store sushi. Sometimes decent, often bad, never great.

If you really want the experience, try a decent shop that makes it fresh. Completely different world

Try sushi from an actual sushi restaurant. That grocery store stuff is mid at best. I used to think I didnt like sushi because I had only gotten it from the grocery store. Then I went to a sushi restaurant and realized that it tastes way better.
