MoneyMagpie’s Vicky Parry takes a look at her top five Mother’s Day freebies this year.

Families looking to celebrate Mother’s Day without spending a fortune could take advantage of several free food offers available across the UK this year.

From free katsu curry to complimentary desserts, a number of restaurant chains are giving mums special treats to mark the occasion.

The deals come as new research commissioned by VistaPrint found many Brits struggle to tell their mum how they really feel.

The study revealed 24% of people find it difficult to say “I love you” to their mum, while 41% say there are things they wish they had told her but never did.

Instead, many people rely on humour to dodge emotional conversations, with 64% admitting they have joked their way out of serious chats with their mum.

But the research also suggests it isn’t expensive gifts that matter most. More than a third of Brits (35%) believe a heartfelt card or message would mean more to their mum than a costly present.

As the cost of living continues to bite, that’s good news for families trying to celebrate the day without overspending.

And for those looking to show appreciation without a big price tag, several restaurants are stepping in with free food and treats for mums this Mother’s Day.

In most locations, mums can enjoy a free Aperol Spritz with their meal, while some restaurants – including those in Scotland – are offering a free dessert instead.

Free dessert at selected steakhouse and pub chains

Some restaurant groups, including Miller & Carter, are offering mums a complimentary dessert when dining with family for Mother’s Day.

Desserts vary by location but can include favourites such as cheesecake, chocolate puddings and other classic sweet treats.

Sometimes the best gifts cost nothing

Mother’s Day this year falls on Sunday March 30, and the research suggests many people find it easier to show appreciation through gestures rather than words.

Spending time together, sharing a meal or writing a heartfelt card can often mean far more than an expensive present.

As Vicky Parry, Editor at MoneyMagpie, says:

“Mother’s Day can feel like another expensive occasion in an already costly year, but the truth is most mums value time and thought far more than money. A simple meal together, a thoughtful card or even a free treat while you’re out can mean just as much as a pricey gift.”
