It’s easy to assume that our favorite Hollywood stars have a private chef whipping up elaborate dinners and fanciful desserts. And while that may be the case for some A-listers—especially those sticking to strict superhero or footballer diets—it might surprise you just how many Oscar, Grammy, and Super Bowl winners love home cooking as much as we do.
Beloved actress Jennifer Garner has been showcasing her favorite recipes for years on her social media series “Pretend Cooking Show.” And, even though some networks have allegedly approached Garner to do a real cooking show, it seems the closest we’ll get to a Garner-led cooking show on our TVs is via her YouTube channel.
But, as long as the bubbly Golden Globe-winning actress continues sharing her favorite weeknight meals, desserts, and hacks somewhere, we’re happy.
Recently, Garner shared her go-to foods not on her social media series, but on the “Dish” podcast—and we learned that the “The Last Thing He Told Me” actress shares the same affinity for a famous four-ingredient pasta recipe as we do.
Jennifer Garner’s Favorite 4-Ingredient Pasta Recipe
During a rapid-fire segment on “Dish,” a podcast presented by the U.K.’s Waitrose brand, Garner was asked about a few of her favorite dishes—from her go-to method for eggs (scrambled) to her fave sandwich (peanut butter and honey) and her best potato recipe (Emily Blunt’s roasted potatoes).
When asked if she had a favorite pasta recipe, Garner was quick to offer up a simple four-ingredient one that often goes viral online: Marcella Hazan’s butter-tomato sauce.
For the unitiatied, the late Italian chef’s tomato sauce calls for just four ingredients, which is very different from your grandma’s Sunday sauce. Hazan’s tomato sauce, according to her recipe on our sister site Food & Wine, is made with a can of tomatoes, 5 tablespoons of butter, kosher salt, and a medium onion that’s cut in half and simmered in the sauce as-is. There’s no dicing, no roasting garlic, and no meat. Instead, all you need is a bit of patience.
The tomatoes, butter, salt, and onion are cooked uncovered for 45 minutes to an hour, or until the sauce thickens. Once thick, you discard the onion and serve the sauce over your favorite pasta shape.
It couldn’t be easier, and Garner particularly loves it for its unique flavor.
“It’s just so nice. It’s very sweet,” she says.
As the sauce simmers, the onion imparts a sweet flavor to the already juicy, sweet tomatoes. Fans have called it the “best sauce [they’ve] ever had”—but even if you don’t think it beats your own nonna’s sauce, it’s certainly the easiest recipe there is.
