The 2026 Michelin guide is out and offers proof that fine dining doesn’t have to break the bank – here are some options for delicious but affordable French cuisine.

The 2026 Michelin Guide offers a range of options for enjoying a gastronomic experience without feeling like you’re spending too much.

With its 654 starred restaurants and a host of bistronomique establishments, it places particular emphasis on the Bib Gourmand label and competitively priced lunch menus.

The French word bistronomique is a blend of bistro and gastronomique (gastronomic). It describes a style of dining that combines the casual atmosphere and affordability of a traditional French bistro with the high culinary standards of fine dining.

The Bib Gourmand was launched in 1997. It recognises restaurants offering a full meal for around €40 to €45 (excluding drinks). In 2026, the French Michelin selection includes 430 Bibs, including 75 new establishments.

“In this economic climate marked by inflation and rising food prices, this effort is worth highlighting” said Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guide.

The best way to find these affordable options is via the Michelin Guide app or website. Select your city, go to “distinction” and tick either the Bib Gourmand icon or the number of stars, and finally filter by price range.

As for Michelin-starred restaurants, the best deal remains the weekday lunch service. Several one-star establishments offer a “lunch menu” for under €40, sometimes only from Tuesday to Friday and with a limited number of covers, so it’s well worth checking the lunch options for a fancy place that might otherwise break the bank.

Here’s a selection of some of the €40 options – although remember that wine will be extra;

Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Agave (Bourg-en-Bresse) – This restaurant is a mix of Mexican and French cuisine. It has a deal on Fridays during lunch time, where you can have a starter, a main dish and a dessert (entrée, plat, dessert) for €25. A chosen menu costs around €35, while four courses can go up to €70.

Accentué (Lyon) – In the city of Lyon, this restaurant offers a subtle take on French cuisine. During lunch, the entrée + plat + dessert menu costs €27. For dinner, main dishes remain under €30.

Île-de-France

Cabane (Nanterre) – Located slightly outside of Paris, Cabane offers a variety of different types of food. Its special price lunch menu is available throughout the week except on Saturdays. The price for the three courses is €37, and single main dishes cost around €30.

Kodawari Ramen – Yokochō (Paris 6ème arrondissement) – This ramen restaurant has been all the rage in Paris for the past few years. You cannot make reservations, and often the line waiting outside is quite long, although they recently installed a system where you arrive in front of the restaurant, scan a QR code, and it will tell you the approximate waiting time.

This particular place is focused on meat, but they do have another restaurant near the Louvre which specialises in fish recipes. Prices are quite affordable, with bowls of ramen ranging from €14 to €18.

Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Sens (Bordeaux) – This restaurant focuses on French traditional dishes with a modern twist. The menu changes depending on seasonal products. For lunch and only during the week, you can have a menu that costs €25. They also offer a four-course menu for €62. Meanwhile, main dishes all remain under €30.

La Chapelle (Sauternes) – This one is located in a vineyard in the domaine of a castle, the Château Guiraud. The three-course meal for this one, available all week, is €35, and main courses are all €18.

Occitanie

Bonnie (Cahors) – Bonnie is run by a young couple who specialise in French cuisine and have a good range of vegetarian options. The basic three-course meal is set at €32. But they offer a special menu which includes a starter, a main dish, cheese, pre-dessert and dessert at €53.

Les Dodus (Puy-L’Évêque) – This one only offers their lunch menu during the week, and for the three-course meal, it costs €23, including cheese. The price per dish, including starters, can vary between €5 and €47.

Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur

Café des Musiciens (Nice) – All dishes include seasonal products, and their lunch menu is available from Monday to Friday. The price for three courses is €30.

Prosper (Marseille) – This restaurant is open during the week and focuses on Asian and French cuisine. Starters are around €7 to €15, main dishes between €17 and 25 €, while desserts are €9.

These are only a few examples of the recently decorated restaurants featured in the Bib Gourmand section of the 2026 Michelin Guide. You can find the rest of the list here.
