In Rheinhessen, unknown individuals have once again stolen large quantities of grapes. As reported by SWR, the perpetrators last struck between Friday and Saturday of last week in a vineyard near Westhofen (district of Alzey-Worms). There, they completely harvested seven rows of vines. Previously, other winemakers in the region had also been stolen from in a similar manner.

According to the police, there are now four reports of grape theft – unknown individuals had first struck about ten days ago in Gundheim, stealing Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc grapes. Cases have also been reported in Monzernheim, Worms, and Flörsheim-Dalsheim. However, winemakers estimate that the number of affected parties is significantly higher: According to SWR, at least eight vineyards in the Wonnegau have been emptied this year.

The perpetrators are believed to have been using a grape harvester, which suggests organized thefts. The damage for the winemakers is substantial. In total, vineyard areas of between 2,000 and 3,500 square meters have been harvested, with the total damage estimated at more than 15,000 euros.

The police have no leads on the perpetrators so far. Many winemakers are skeptical about whether they can even be caught. Even the state investigation office cannot subsequently determine from which vineyard the grapes originated. Similar cases were reported last year, and the investigations remained inconclusive.
