A family-owned Massachusetts restaurant chain known for serving classic Italian cuisine has closed one of its Greater Boston locations after more than a decade.

Comella’s in Melrose closed on Saturday, March 20 after 13 years, according to a post in the UNCENSORED Melrose MA Facebook Group and confirmed by a company spokesperson to MassLive Monday.

The Melrose restaurant, which was independently owned and operated, was located at 478A Main St.

“This was a franchisee-level decision following operational and financial challenges specific to that franchisee’s experience,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

“Comella’s continues to operate successfully across our other locations, and we remain committed to serving our customers and communities,” the statement continued. “We invite our loyal customers to visit any of our 10 locations, including our nearby Belmont and Winchester restaurants. We appreciate the support from the Melrose community over the years.”

Comella’s was established in 1988 to offer affordable homemade Italian food to customers of all ages and backgrounds, according to the chain’s website. The family business sells staple Italian dishes from fresh pastas and sauces to pizzas and entrees.

Comella’s still operates in Belmont, Concord, Hingham, Natick, Needham, Wellesley, Newton, West Roxbury, Winchester and Westwood.
