Trader Joe’s is leaning into one of its most popular flavor blends with a new recipe contest inviting customers to create something original using its Chile Lime Seasoning. The prize is simple but appealing: a $200 Trader Joe’s gift card, plus a chance to have your recipe featured.

Here’s what to know before you start cooking.

A flavor profile that’s already a fan favorite

The focus of the contest is Trader Joe’s Chile Lime Seasoning Blend, a mix known for balancing heat and salt. It’s the kind of combination that works across a wide range of dishes, from snacks to full meals.

The company notes that chile-lime flavors have long been popular in Mexican cuisine and continue to rank highly with customers. In fact, one of its chile-lime snack products performed so well in customer voting that it was eventually retired into a “hall of fame” category.

That popularity is part of what makes this contest approachable. You don’t need to reinvent flavor. Just find a creative way to use one that people already love.

How the contest works

At its core, the Trader Joe’s Chile Lime Seasoning Recipe Contest is about creating and sharing an original recipe using Trader Joe’s ingredients. But there are a few rules that matter if you want your entry to count.

Participants must:

Create a recipe using the Chile Lime Seasoning Blend plus up to six additional Trader Joe’s ingredients

Use only products currently sold in Trader Joe’s stores

Include a full ingredient list and step-by-step instructions in the Instagram caption

Add the official hashtag #TJsChileLimeContest

Post a photo of the finished dish (no videos allowed)

Basic pantry items like salt, sugar, butter, and cooking oil are allowed and don’t count toward the ingredient limit, but they still need to be listed in your caption.

The emphasis here is on clarity and completeness. If your caption is missing details, the entry won’t be considered.

It’s not just about taste

While flavor is the biggest factor, it’s not the only one. Entries are judged on three main criteria:

That breakdown matters. A great idea won’t go far without a clean, well-lit photo. And a technically perfect dish still needs to feel original.

The photo rules are strict. No text overlays, no watermarks, and no people in the shot. Even garnishes count as ingredients and need to be listed.

In other words, this is part cooking challenge, part visual presentation.

Timing matters more than you think

The submission window is relatively short. Entries opened on March 16, 2026, and close on March 31, 2026, just before midnight Pacific time.

After posting, there’s one extra step: you need to comment “POSTED” on Trader Joe’s official contest announcement on Instagram. It’s a small detail, but skipping it could mean your entry isn’t counted.

Winners will be notified in early April and announced publicly on April 20.

If selected, you’ll need to respond quickly. There’s a 72-hour window to complete the required paperwork and confirm your entry.

What you can win

The top prize is a $200 Trader Joe’s gift card, along with a feature on the company’s website.

Two runners-up will each receive $100 gift cards, and all three winning recipes will be shared on Trader Joe’s Instagram account.

It’s not a life-changing prize, but it’s enough to draw serious entries and enough to make it competitive.

Who can enter

The contest is open to U.S. residents who are 18 or older. There’s no purchase required to participate.

However, Trader Joe’s employees and their families are not eligible, and previous contest winners can enter but aren’t eligible for the grand prize.

Your Instagram account also needs to be public so entries can be reviewed.

Where creativity comes in

The structure of the contest leaves room to experiment.

You can go in a few different directions:

Turn the seasoning into the centerpiece of a snack or appetizer

Use it as a finishing touch on something simple

Build a full dish that layers the flavor in multiple steps

Because you’re limited to six additional ingredients, the challenge is as much about restraint as it is about creativity. Strong entries will likely focus on a clear idea rather than trying to do too much.

There’s also an opportunity to play with contrast. The chile-lime blend already brings heat and brightness, so pairing it with creamy, sweet, or crunchy elements can help a dish stand out.

The takeaway

If you already cook at home and enjoy experimenting, this is a straightforward opportunity to turn one idea into something bigger. The rules are clear, the timeline is tight, and the barrier to entry is low.

The real challenge isn’t entering. It’s creating something simple and worth stopping for.
