Here’s a breakdown of which cheeses are included, where they were sold and how to tell whether your product is part of the recall.

Thirty-one states are affected by the shredded cheese recall, as well as Puerto Rico.

The shredded cheese was sold at major retailers including Walmart, Publix, Aldi and Target.

To determine whether your shredded cheese is included in the recall, check the product’s brand, UPC code and size against the FDA’s list. The recall includes nearly 236,000 cases of low-moisture part-skim mozzarella — the largest portion — along with additional cases of Italian-style blends, pizza-style blends, mozzarella–provolone blends and several store-brand shredded cheeses. The affected products carry sell-by dates from January through late March 2026.

In its Dec. 1 notice, the FDA identified Great Lakes Cheese Co. of Ohio as the manufacturer of the shredded cheese.

The recall is rated as Class II by the FDA for potentially containing metal fragments. A “class II” recall describes an affected product as “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
