To be served the best steak in the world, you’ll have to head to this small village in Spain.

La Cúpula, located in Jiménez de Jamuz (known as a meat lover’s paradise), was just crowned the No. 1 steakhouse on Earth, according to a new ranking of the 101 best steak restaurants across the globe by the aptly named World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants group. The Spanish spot is led by José Gordon, a chef renowned for creating meccas to meat; he and his team take you on a five-hour, 18-course gastronomic journey that’s dedicated to the ox.

In what will be no surprise to anyone, Spanish steakhouses make up four of the top five rankings on the list. Perched at No. 3 is Laia Erretegia, in Hondarribia, where the dining experience is centered on the grill and its dry-aged rib of beef, which is aged for 60 days; I Due Cippi, in Saturnia, and Lana, in Madrid, come in at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. The second spot on the ranking, though, belongs to Margaret in Sydney, where chef Neil Perry takes the helm.

Stateside, meanwhile, the Eighty Six has snagged the 12th spot in the ranking, making the Catch Hospitality Group’s restaurant the best steakhouse in North America. (The company is also behind New York City hot spots like the Corner Store and the recently opened Or’esh.) The intimate West Village locale has taken a massive leap since World’s 101’s previous list of North American steakhouses, where it sat at No. 26. On the menu you’ll find options such as a 30-day dry-aged Delmonico and selection of daily cuts from grass-fed Wagyu Vaca Vieja, served up in a decadently revamped haunt of Ernest Hemingway and other luminaries.

“It’s incredibly humbling to be mentioned alongside some of the greatest chefs and restaurants in the world,” the Eighty Six’s chef Michael Vignola, said in a press statement. “We put so much care into every detail—from sourcing and aging to execution—and this recognition is a true reflection of the dedication and pride our entire team brings to the craft each day.”

New York had a strong showing on the list, with nine spots making the cut. Those include Cote (at No. 21) from Simon Kim, one of our innovators that’s transforming the luxury landscape; La Tête D’or, starring Daniel Boloud’s French take on a classic steakhouse; and Txula Steak from Jośe Andrés, in its first appearance on the ranking. Heading back down under, Sydney had the largest number of restaurants on this year’s list, at 12. Other notable spots worldwide include London’s Hawksmoor, at No. 13, and Burnt Ends in Singapore, at No. 9, AG in Stockholm perched at No. 8; and Asador Bastian, in Chicago, at No. 15.

As for the organization in charge, World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants was founded back in 2018 in London, and has since been releasing rankings of regions worldwide—much like World’s 50 Best Restaurants and 50 Top Pizza. The group sends a team of anonymous inspectors to evaluate each spot for themselves, judging on criteria such as quality of meat, wine program, design, cuts, and more.
