Someone posted about Mediterranean food being only a bowl of ingredients and I’m not sure what kind of information he gets or from where but here’s some inspiration. I am Greek born and raised but now I live in Oslo. I’m in Greece now visiting my family for the week and this is what my mom has cooked for us the last 4 days. Side note my parents have olive trees and they gather all our olive oil.

  1. I arrived Tuesday at 20:30 at night and very hungry. My dad grilled some chicken breast on charcoal and my mom boiled wild green Horta salad ( pikroradika) they had foraged a day before. Olive oil and salt and lemon on the Horta salad).

2+3. Next day Wednesday the 25th of March it’s the national day of independence in Greece. It’s tradition to eat fried battered cod. My mom also made rice with shrimps octopus calamari and mussels, fried potatoes, she boiled beats for salad and we also boil the leaves of the beats for green salad. There’s also taramosalata for dipping the fresh bread she made ( it’s a fish roe and bread with olive oil spread) and skordalia ( a garlic and bread spread).

  1. Yesterday we ate grilled steak on charcoal, beat salad from the previous day, fried potatoes, tomato salad ( simple, just cut tomato salt olive oil and wild oregano my mom and dad forage) , skordalia, my moms baked bread and for more green salad more wild green Horta my parents foraged in the morning ( this time they are called Vlastaria).

  2. Today Friday my parents always eat vegan dinner so we are eating tomato salad ( again simple salt olive oil and oregano, we would usually have onion too but my mom doesn’t like it), and green bean stew.

My parents are normal weight and very healthy, they eat everything in moderation. I grew up like this and while it might not look the healthiest, my dad is 80 something and he’s barely on a cholesterol medication. So they must be doing something right 🙂 Though they don’t eat fried stuff that much, it’s more of these days that I’m here. If people want I’ll post what I ate the rest of the days I’m here! Hope you get a little inspired by all this!

That braised green beans and fresh black eyed peas salad is a national treasure, keep good care of her! Lovely dishes. I can feel the Mediterranean breeze from picture, just like my parents used to make for me in a week day.

Green beans without feta is a crime but I guess your parents are observing Lent.

Might add that while fried cod isnt a posterboy for mediterranean dish it is the 1 of total 2 days in 40 where fish is allowed during orthodox Lent.
