World’s Most Expensive Bottle Of Wine Sold At Auction

The world’s most expensive wine sold at an auction for more than $800,000 over the weekend, the New York Post reports.

A single bottle of 1945 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti was sold at the annual La Paulée for Acker, the world’s largest fine wine auction house and America’s oldest wine merchant, for $812,500, which broke the previous world record for most expensive bottle sold at auction at $558,000 set in 2018, marking a nearly 50% increase, according to Forbes. An Acker representative said that the auction purchase “cement(s) the 1945 vintage as the most coveted bottle in the history of wine collecting” in a statement obtained by Business Wire.

“We made history this weekend,” said John Kapon, chairman of Acker. “I’ve had the privilege of tasting the 1945 Romanée-Conti just three times in my life, and it is the greatest wine I’ve ever tasted …This weekend’s event exemplified the soul and spirit of Burgundy, bringing together the world’s top producers and collectors and creating the perfect conditions for a truly historic result.”

Acker wouldn’t disclose who purchased the bottle, but said the wine was initially sourced from the personal cellar of Robert Drouhin, who had previously ran Maison Joseph Drouhin, a notable French wine house, for nearly half a century.
