Hi everyone.

I’ve recently started making homemade cookies, and I’m thinking about turning it into a small business. Friends and family really like them, so I want to try selling — but I’m not sure where to start.

I live in Ohio, so I’m wondering:

Where do people usually sell homemade baked goods?

Are farmers markets worth it?

Any experience with selling online or through social media?

I’d really appreciate any advice, especially from people who’ve done this before 🙏

Attached photos for my cookies.

Thanks!

These look really good, you’re actually in a strong spot to start selling locally.

Most people I’ve seen start with farmers markets + Instagram, but one thing that really helps once you get a bit of traction is having a simple website. Even something basic with your menu, prices, and a way to take pre-orders or show where you’re selling makes you look a lot more established.

If you want, I could actually help you put something like that together or point you in the right direction. PM me if you’re interested

I started at farmers markets to get my name out there. I did not make very much money but I did make a LOT of connections.

I met vendors who order from me all the time. I met coffee shop owners who now buy wholesale. I met event organizers who put me on events where I do make a lot of money. And I met repeat customers who now order customs, preorders, and come to all my pop ups.

So yes, starting at farmers markets was profoundly worth it for me in the long run, but at the time it was a lot of work for not very much money.

You might be able to do the same type of networking online if that doesn’t sound worth it to you. Check out Sugar Cookie Marketing (group) on Facebook, and their podcast Baking It Down. They highlight all the possible ways to market a cookie/baking business.

Good luck, your treats look so yummy!
