COOPERSBURG, Pa. (WFMZ) — If you’ve driven along route 309 in Southern Lehigh County, chances are you’ve seen a giant pair of red pants.
The pair of pants, and the top half of the 25-ft statue, is The Inside Scoop’s mascot Chip. Chip split at the waist back in February after a wind storm.
“It was Ice Cream for Breakfast Day and while all our customers were eating donuts and croissants and ice cream, our fallen brother, chip, it just got too cold for him and he split at the waist and he just hit the ground. It was actually kind of scary. I was here,” said employee Rocco Corradini.
Luckily, no one was hurt–except for Chip’s pride.
“He’s been down for two months now. Everyone is very excited for him to come back,” said manager Natasha Obleschuk.
Virginia artist Mark Cline created the beloved statue for the ice cream shop a decade ago. Cline came back to the area to restore Chip, his ice cream scoop, cone and hat to their former glory.
“I’m sure he’ll be glad to be standing there again,” Cline told 69 News.
In honor of chip’s top-half returning, The Inside Scoop is unveiling a brand-new Chip-themed flavor this Friday. There will also be a welcome back party for Chip in May as the shop celebrates its anniversary.
With the careful maneuvering of a crane, Chip was made whole again on Thursday afternoon.
“When a piece is there for a long time, it becomes part of the family. It becomes iconic to the neighborhood,” Cline stated.
