WEST HAVEN — Where visitors to the city’s shoreline formerly rented kayaks and surf boards, soon they may grab an ice cream cone or other frozen treats instead.

Coastal Cone Creamery is coming to 270 Captain Thomas Boulevard at the former Savin Rock Surf Shop, the business announced on social media. The surf shop, which closed last October, had been a staple near the city’s beach since July 2018.

“Renovations are underway, and we’re getting ready to bring Coastal Cone Creamery to the neighborhood!” the post said. No menu has been posted yet and no further information has been made available on their social media.

The business owners filed an application April 6 with the city to operate the business there and make renovations, according to city officials.

The business is owned by Kubra Tas of Hamden and Kenan Yardim, both of Hamden, according to their business filing with the Connecticut Secretary of State’s office. Neither could be reached for comment.

The surf shop was founded by lifelong buddies Kevin Darcey and George Curtis, who grew up together in West Haven, the New Haven Register had reported.

The farewell post for the surf shop said Darcey “put his heart and soul into making his store the best for everyone who came in.”

The surf shop hosted vendor fairs, children’s summer camps, lessons and kayak tours.

The shop “offered everything we could ask for as a beachfront community,” the Surf Shop post said.

City officials are pleased to see an ice cream shop come to the boardwalk area.

“I’m excited to welcome Coastal Cone Creamery to the heart of our shoreline,” said West Haven Mayor Dorinda Borer.

“Seeing the former Savin Rock Surf Shop space transform into a vibrant new spot for families to enjoy ice cream and frozen treats is a wonderful sign of the continued revitalization of our boardwalk,” Borer said. “This new venture captures the true spirit of a West Haven summer, and we can’t wait to see our community making sweet new memories here very soon.”
