The Argentine Embassy in Korea hosted a special wine-pairing event over the weekend to celebrate the annual Malbec World Day, commemorating Argentina’s flagship wine varietal.

“Argentina Malbec Weekend” took place at Hidden Barrel Hannam in Yongsan District, central Seoul, from Friday to Sunday evening.

Each day, three different types of Argentine Malbec were recommended and displayed in the restaurant for visitors to taste and purchase.

The restaurant provides visitors with empanadas, which the embassy described as the “ultimate partner” for pairing with Malbec.

However, the wine also matches well with Korean cuisine, according to Argentine Ambassador to Korea Dario Celaya, who personally recommended enjoying it with meat dishes, such as Korean barbecue, as well as spicy foods.

“This event is a chance for everyone to experience our wine and celebrate its culture,” Celaya said.

Malbec World Day is a global initiative held each year on April 17, marking the day the establishment of the first agricultural school in Mendoza, Argentina, was proposed in 1853 — a turning point that paved the way for Malbec to emerge as the country’s signature wine.
