Back in March, Trader Joe’s invited its most devoted fans to get cooking! The cult-favorite grocer turned its attention to one of its most beloved pantry staples, the Chile Lime Seasoning Blend, and launched a nationwide recipe contest designed to celebrate creativity in the kitchen.

The premise was simple but also a little challenging: create an original dish using the Chile Lime Seasoning Blend plus up to six additional Trader Joe’s ingredients. Entries had to be posted on social media with a photo and full recipe, making this as much a visual contest as a culinary one. A panel of Trader Joe’s crew members judged submissions based primarily on taste (60%), followed by photo composition (30%) and creativity (10%).

There were other rules that sharpened the challenge. Only Trader Joe’s products could be used (aside from basic pantry staples like oil or salt), and contestants had to work within a strict ingredient limit, forcing home cooks to think strategically about flavor layering. The reward? A $200 gift card for the grand prize winner, $100 for each runner-up, a feature on the Trader Joe’s website and, of course, bragging rights!

The contest officially closed at the end of March, with winners announced on April 20.

A Flavor Profile Worth Competing For

The choice of ingredient was no accident. Trader Joe’s Chile Lime Seasoning Blend has long been a fan favorite, known for its balance of tangy citrus, mild heat and salt, akin to the classic Mexican combination of chile, lime and salt that’s used everywhere from fresh fruit to grilled meats. Its versatility made it the perfect canvas for culinary experimentation. And experiment people did.

Meet the Winners

Trader Joe’s has now revealed the three winning recipes, each showcasing a different direction the seasoning can take.

Grand Prize Winner

The Grand Prize went to “Chile Lime Botana Bowl” by Andrea Linage, a snack-style salad that leans into crunch, acidity and sweet-salty contrast. The dish combines diced Persian cucumbers and shredded carrots with crushed Chili & Lime Flavored Rolled Corn Tortilla Chips, roasted peanuts and fresh pomegranate seeds for bursts of texture and flavor. Lime juice and Chile Lime Seasoning Blend tie everything together.

First Runner-Up

The First Runner-Up was “Street Corn-Inspired Chile Lime Shrimp & Grits” by Remya & Suhas Rao, a hearty, layered dish that fuses Southern comfort food with street corn flavors. It features chile-lime–marinated Argentinian red shrimp served over creamy polenta-based grits enriched with cotija cheese and butter. Roasted corn, garlic, and a chile-lime–infused butter sauce bring depth and smokiness, while cilantro adds a fresh finish.

Second Runner-Up

The Second Runner-Up was “Chile Lime Sunrise Huevos Rancheros” by Zulma Cordero, a brunch-inspired dish built around sunny-side-up eggs, warm corn tortillas and bold layering of toppings. It includes a chile-lime crema made from Greek yogurt and lime juice, alongside Cowboy Caviar, cotija cheese and additional seasonings. A finishing drizzle of olive oil and lime enhances the freshness.

Honorable Mention

An Honorable Mention went to “Chile Lime & Mango Sticky Rice Pudding Pops” by Meg Mezeske, a frozen dessert that transforms rice pudding into tropical popsicles. Coconut milk and sugar enrich the base, while diced mango mixed with lime juice and Chile Lime Seasoning adds a sweet-spicy citrus layer throughout. Once frozen, the pops are finished with an extra dip in Chile Lime Seasoning for a bold, tangy kick.

All these recipes look incredible and I love how unexpected each one of them is. So, if you’re looking to spice things up at home, look no further than these fresh and creative ideas.
