Anyone know if this is fixable?

My husband is really upset since I chipped this brand new decanter after one use. I feel awful and though it technically doesn’t affect the functionality of the decanter, I want to try to get fixed if possible.

I would appreciate any input 😭😔💔

You could try to find a local glass blower. They may be able to repair the decanter. Not a guarantee but a good place to start.

Definitely more dangerous to chug from now

You could buy a replacement on Temu and hope he doesn’t notice.

Alternatively, many university chemistry departments have a glass blower, so if you live near a university with a chem dept, might be worth enquiring. They probably can’t fix per se, but they might be able to rework it to not be sharp/as prominent.

There are people who repair crystal, think chips in fancy wine glasses

The beaker has a ground edge where it is chipped. It may be possible to have it ground again
Most hot glass shops have wet belt sanders.

Easy to fix with some sandpaper.

Glass file or take to a glass shop like others have suggested.

“You see this goblet?” asks Achaan Chaa, the Thai meditation master. “For me this glass is already broken. I enjoy it; I drink out of it. It holds my water admirably, sometimes even reflecting the sun in beautiful patterns. If I should tap it, it has a lovely ring to it. But when I put this glass on the shelf and the wind knocks it over or my elbow brushes it off the table and it falls to the ground and shatters, I say, ‘Of course.’ When I understand that the glass is already broken, every moment with it is precious.”

As long as you don’t chip the two kagekiyo’s in the back you’d be alright in my book!

Not sure about the decanter, but I think it is time to go bottle shopping for an apology.

Tell him to lighten up! At least it makes for a kind of funny story with it happening that quickly after he got it. I got a watch for my wedding day that was significantly more expensive than this and woke up the next morning with a big old scratch on the bezel. For a minute I was like shit…. and then I realized that scratch will always remind me of one of the best days of my life and one hell of a party.

I’d just pack your bags and hit the road.

    Hubby needs to relax.

It’s just a thing. If it’s that important, get a new one.

Old French saying “glass wants to be sand”. I never buy anything glass without being ok with breaking it.

Better lawyer up. Divorce ain’t cheap.

  16. ExaminationFancy

Nope. Just buy a replacement, and call it an expensive mistake.

Next time, let your husband clean it.

Glass got chipped, not a story, the story is paying $350 for a wine vase

This is why I decant my Trader Joe’s Pinot Grigio in a juice carafe

He is upset immediately now. You’re his wife, and in a couple days he won’t be upset and be embarrassed that he fussed with you. He will forgive you, you will forgive him, and you will enjoy wine together. 🍷🍷

Fine grit sand paper and wet sand. Wash well and tell your husband to get his panties out of a twist. 🙄

It’s not the same but you can try getting it repaired by someone familiar with kintsugi if it’s going to bother him?

  22. Impossible-Charity-4

Oh well. He’ll get over it.

Let me tell you story. Me, my wife and her brother were sitting around a table in backyard. They were having beers and I was having a Bordeaux from decanter. It was semi dark. Unknown to me while I went to pee inside, they knocked something at the edge of decanter and chipped it. In this case the glass chips fell into the decanter. And I kept drinking from it. Thankfully my throat was not lacerated from the chipped glass pieces. We had an argument about how dumb their action was.

So people, don’t let anyone drink from a chipped decanter. It’s never save. A slight knock could chip off few more pieces into the drink.

Why are the knives facing up? Is this common for that stand type?

  25. DaveyGee16

Just bust up the knives, he’ll never notice.

Lightly related, once I chipped a glass door. The guy from the glass shop gave some sand paper and carefully sanded the affected area. It’s no gonna be perfect but not dangerous ugly either

He sounds like a little bitch.
    It’s glass.
    Shit happens.
    Get over it.

  28. MyNebraskaKitchen

Find a local glassblower studio and they can smooth off the edge. It won’t be brand-new pretty but it’ll be safe to use.

  29. Overall_Outcome_392

Yall need to calm down. This is too much drama for a tiny chip.

  30. LaunchPad_DC

The glass seems really thick to be that expensive.

  31. KiwiSuch9951

The fate of glass is to break.

That said, if there is a glassworks near you, they may be able to carefully grind the lip down.

  32. spesce1850

You can’t fix this or your marriage. Dm me I know a good divorce attorney.

We had a similar decanter and it was ridiculously fragile. We tried to be so careful with it, but the rim still it had a few small chips before the whole thing eventually cracked into pieces.

That was when I decided to not worry about fancy decanters. Got something less sexy, but more sturdy.

  34. I bought my husband a very expensive (at the time) wine aerator- cost about $275- I was exchanging it for a different model and brought it with me on the train to work- I got up from my seat and forgot it- and it was a very expensive lapse of memory. Someone else got an amazing Father’s Day present.
(And yes I got him another one- it did hurt the second time)

Thats why I use a glass water pitcher.. Practical and cheap… $10 @ homegoods

You can replace with Erlenmeyer flasks and break 20 of them for that price and not feel bad.
