Pro tip for cooking kale: coat the pan in olive oil so it slides out easier into the trash can

Because your plants are close together, you might want to pull some entire plants for better air and water circulation, but over the course of the summer, you can harvest the outer leaves and just leave 5 leaves on each plant. In two weeks they will look like you never harvested them and you can repeat it. The “five leaves” was based on research on a simple rule to maximize the yield of greens. With kale, it also helps knock off cabbage worms if you keep harvesting steadily.

Yes it’s kale. Pick the outer leaves off each plant and leave the main stem and middle (called cut and come again). It will keep growing new leaves until late in the fall season.

My kale looked like that last summer. At a certain point it started curling up and looking more like kale! Maybe something with heat or maturity?

I love kale cooked with potatoes. It’s really simple and you can make it with leftover mashed potatoes too. Basically you chop the potatoes, boil them for a few minutes and then add in a lot of kale and some salt. Boil it until the potatoes are cooked.

My dad would drain 95% of the water and then add a lot of butter or margarine. Mash the potatoes with the kale and serve it all with some sausage or Kiebasa or even just as a side dish.

Here’s a recipe if you need one https://www.thedutchtable.com/2010/10/boerenkool-met-worst-kale-potatoes-with.html

When they’re small like this they make a delicious kale Ceasar. ‘Massage’ the leaves in a ziplock with olive oil salt and pepper then toss with homemade Ceasar dressing and croutons. Yum
