As you skim through the ingredient lists on your electrolyte packets, drinks or tablets, here are a few ingredients that are considered essential, nice-to-have and those that could cause some stomach issues when taken in volume.
After all, sometimes there can be too much of a good thing with a surplus of vitamins and minerals that you may not necessarily need, so it’s important not to overload on electrolytes. You don’t typically need an electrolyte supplement every day unless you’re exercising and sweating rigorously, or recovering from illness.
Common side effects could see increased blood pressure, upset stomach, irritability, muscle cramps and headaches.
So when in doubt, be sure to check with your physician before you take any electrolyte supplements.
Sodium: Helps retain water, maintain blood pressure and enables muscle function. The sweet spot will be 200+ mg for most activities, as too much can disrupt certain medications.Potassium: Helps prevent muscle cramps and balance sodium.
