French cooperative brand d’aucy has announced that it will source red beans from Brittany and the Centre-Val de Loire region in a move that bolsters France’s domestic food sovereignty and reduce reliance on external supply chains.

Initiated in 2024, the project aims to replace red bean sourcing from external partners in the southwest of France, the Vendée region, and North America – traditionally one of the world’s primary production hubs.

Previously, underdeveloped domestic supply chains forced the brand to rely on multi-regional sourcing to meet processing demand, the company noted.

With the addition of two regional production sites, d’aucy ultimately expects to achieve 100% self-sufficiency for its annual red bean supply.

The brand plans to expand this localised sourcing model to other legumes and plant-based offerings in the future.

National Supply Chain

By establishing a local supply chain, d’aucy aims to address both shifting consumer habits – volume sales of pulses except flageolets, have increased by 38% since 2015 – and farmers sustainability, offering cooperative members viable, climate-resilient crop varieties.

Alexandre J., farmer member of the Eureden cooperative, said, “I wanted to start growing red beans to diversify my activities. […] In a context of climate change, this diversity is essential to strengthening the resilience of our farms.”

As part of its consumer transparency push, d’aucy has also adopted the Origin’Info label, a standardised French labelling initiative that explicitly details the geographic origin of agricultural raw materials in processed foods.

Katell Baudry, marketing and sales director for Eureden Vegetables and Prepared Foods (owner of the d’aucy brand), said, “d’aucy is a leading brand in the canned vegetable aisle, particularly in pulses. By listening to consumer expectations, we were pioneers in this segment. As a leader, we have a responsibility to revitalise the offering to enable French consumers to incorporate more plant-based proteins into their diets.

“Thanks to our cooperative model, we operate with agility, working directly with farmers. The development of our red bean supply chain is fully aligned with this approach, offering a local, high-quality product that meets societal expectations.”
