I think that is the reason I felt sluggish over the years of following a plant based diet that is based on eating loads of whole grains, legumes and fruits and veggies; and it may be the reason behind why some of you still did not reach desired end. I have couple of reasons behind it:
First and foremost, many of the phytonutrients and some of the most important trace minerals are fat soluble, and which means that you will absorb a lot less from eating a meal without any fat containing food. That does not need further elobration I suppose; carotenes, Vitamin K, Vitamin E and copper etc. need fat for proper and efficient absorption.
Secondly, saturated fat from whole plants and saturated fats from animals function differentially and have distinct effects. For example, although not based on whole plant foods, this [study](https://www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/13/5/1549) still found that plant saturated fats are not necessarily as same as animal saturated fats considering their effects.
Thirdly, even for monounsaturated fat a similar case may be made. According to that [study](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/03/180321162252.htm), plant based MUFA is far more superior to animal MUFA on several health parameters. Not only in comparison, but [MUFA appears to positively contribute cognitive health by other parameters. ](https://n.neurology.org/content/52/8/1563)
I suppose hence PUFA is strictly essential, no one makes cases against PUFA, so let it pass all along.
Lastly, we all know that fructose in fruits are detrimental to health and yet fruit as a whole food is very beneficial to health due to being a mixture of Fibre, sugar, antioxidants etc. Now, that being the case, why do plant community advocate against some of the most incredible foods out there like dark chocolate, nuts and seeds due to containing significant amounts of saturated fat? Clearly, those foods cannot be reduced to one of their ingredients and more clearly, majority of fat in plant based foods are MUFA and PUFA either way.
But even than, negative outlook on saturated fats are mostly based on the effects of animal products. Do we even know that plant based saturated fat is same as animal saturated fat?
Anyway, based on these, I just decided to eat more of whole plants that are rich in fats such as nuts and seeds a while ago, If anything, I only noticed positive effects. No more feeling sluggish all the time.
