Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. Spinach is a recommendation. I think that is the fastest thing that I have grown and then it keeps growing. Also pumpkins grow like crazy. I loved the list though.

  2. Wow, I have just found your site and it is just wonderful. Could you tell me what you grow your carrots in. I planted last year and they were a bit stunted. The Paris Carrot did better than the long variety. Thank you for your advice.

  3. I appreciate how informational you were about the vegetables, and am now eager to plant them ! that bugs bunny joke was funny though i was convinced lol

  4. I'd probably add zucchini and summer squash, or at least zucchini. I've had cakes that replaced much of the shortening with blended up zucchini. Dad would grill sliced onions, zucchini and summer squash every summer which is delicious. Grandma would make zucchini bread every fall – and that's the best ever. Zucchini is also a very prolific plant. If I had a garden that could grow anything (other than slugs) I would grow zucchini, onions and tomatoes for sure. Great video, thanks. 😊

  5. The amount of dad jokes alone deserves him a subscription, let alone the knowledge that he shares and his storytelling based on his own life. Stay healthy!!

  6. Just found your channel, & I like it! I have some alternate info regarding fruits like tomato's & other related crops. Tomatoes are a part of the nightshade family along with potatoes, peppers, legumes (beans) & eggplant. & unfortunately for any health benefits these plants may carry, they also contain a type of evolutionary defence mechanism that's toxic & not good to eat within the seeds & core of the fruit, which are called "lychans". This substance is the main contributing factor to what's called "leaky gut syndrome", as these microbiomes eat away at the lining of our gut & punch little holes in it, causing harmful bacteria to leech out of the gut & cause havoc on the body. Symptoms such as weigh gain, achy joints, concentration problems, & a whole host of other health issues can occur if consuming the seeds of these fruits regularly.

  7. My husband and I love your videos. We are living on the coast in Oregon USA. We are learning so much from you and appreciate your knowledge. We are getting some of the Birdies garden beds. We have been using wood. This year for some reason our carrots have not grow well, not sure if it’s the seeds? We noticed this year our seeds aren’t growing well. I wish I could get a shovel like yours. Thanks for all you do and keep up the good work with your videos. The Turners

  8. Excellent list, and here South Georgia in the states, just about everything on that list is in a plantable season now~!
