A super simple beef stew slow-cooked for 4 hours with onions, carrots and pickled green chillies, but does anyone have tips on how to thicken the gravy without cornstarch?

I mix a flour and water together and add it.

I mix a powdered brown gravy mix with some of the stew juices then add it back into the pot/slow cooker.

If you are adding beef broth, dissolve a packet of plain unflavored gelatin to the broth.

A flour roux is great, and really the best way flavor-wise…But you’ll get more thickening in a hurry if you use xantham gum, guar gum, or arrowroot. The advantage over corn starch is that they don’t have that odd nasty taste that cornstarch can have.

My quick cheat: I always have a box of instant mashed potatoes in my pantry in case I need a little to thicken up my stew’s gravy.

    Add instant mashed potato flakes
