I found even the Smartfood brand white cheddar to be almost as bad. The salt flavors are a little better but in the same general direction.
The best way to make salt stick to air-popped popcorn is to squirt a fine mist salt-brine (salt mixed in water) once a layer while it’s popping. Not too often so it doesn’t get soggy. While it’s still a bit wet, you can add the nooch (nutritional yeast) if you want. The hot air blowing on it dries it out fairly quick. Sometimes I elevate the bowl with something so more hot air gets on the first kernels out.
I made the salt brine using boiling water to get the most salt possible in the water, let it cool down, and into a dedicated mist sprayer it goes. I used this to remove pesticides from my produce, so it’s by the sink anyway.
They sell glass spray bottles on amazon if you want to avoid some of the plastics issue (the spray mechanism and straw is still plastic but a lot less plastic exposure overall).
A serving size of prepackaged Utz cheese popcorn is one ounce, not 6.5 ounces. So 170 calories. Smartfood is similar at 160 cals. Two tbsp of Jolly Time kernels makes five cups of air-popped popcorn, which is 100 calories. Skip the butter. Spray with saltwater or whatever low-cal seasoning.
