I looked this up a little while back, the evidence strongly favors kimbap coming from Japanese maki.
That’s not to say no one in Korea ever rolled rice in seaweed before it came from Japan, I am talking about the “standard” gimbap we are familiar with.
That the evidence strongly favors Japan is my opinion. IMO it’s pretty obvious, but many Koreans consider this to be in contention and claim it to be a traditional Korean dish, some even claim Japanese maki was exported to them from Korea in the first place.
