While traveling through Iceland, we stopped at a roadside restaurant one evening and horse pepper steak was the nightly special. I do not know which part of the horse was used. The flavor resembled that of steak, but with a slightly gamy taste and chewy texture. Overall the steak was underwhelming, and I would rate it 3/10, but I’d give it another try at a different restaurant.

Idk why, but Ive always thought that theres a reason humans settled on a lamb, cow, pig, chicken, and fish regimen.
Horse you say??
How was it??? Looks tasty. Would love to try it.
One of the best steaks of my life was in Iceland- Reykjavik restaurant. It was horse, and expensive but so incredible. Tender, not gamey and delicious. Sorry your experience wasn’t the same!
“Chewy texture”
It was someone’s elderly horse 😞
I’ve had some really amazing horse steaks and others that weren’t so great like yours. with horse, the product can really vary a lot. most of the cheaper meat comes from old, retired horses not bred for meat, while the quality meat is from horses that were bred, raised, and fattened specifically for meat.
if you ever try horse again hope its a better experience. you may want to get the steak from an equine butcher instead of a restaurant, though.
I’m emotionally upset
I know it’s immature and judgmental to feel this way, but this makes me bummed out.
Chances are your horse steak was still better than hakarl, an infamous Icelandic delicacy
I would not enjoy this. Neigh
Giddy up.
