Anyone got any favourites or recommendations in Toronto, Markham/Richmond Hill, Scarborough, or anywhere really?
This was always my gold standard thing to try to test the quality of a dim sum place, the tenderness and taste of the shrimp with just a little snap, the rice roll itself being tender while still holding together, and the soy sauce being hot/warm and also sweet as well (not just pour any bottled soy sauce on it).
I remember back then that the Perfect Chinese Restaurant (Brimley/Sheppard) cheung fun was quality, and during dim sum mornings I would always walk up with the order paper when I see the cart, and carry back 2 or 3 plates myself 😂; that said, Perfect Chinese went through some cook/ownership changes over the previous years, and the quality took a noticeable turn and they are now supr inconsistent where sometimes they’re great and sometimes they’re garbo and I never know which I’m getting when I go feelsbadman (or is it the nostalgia? idk).
My favourite varieties are the shrimp cheung fun, and the cheung fun with the fried doll stick (you tiao / youtiao / yau char kwai).

Not at a dimsum place, but current fave is either Sam’s Congee (they have very fluffy crispy youtiao) or Mill Stone (we like their mushroom cheungfun).
Yi Jiang cheung fun passable its good but that’s not the hk style.
Jack’s wonton near Yonge and Finch. King’s noodle had decent ones too, but it’s been a few years since I last went.
Yin Ji is my go to but go to their Warden and Steeles location if you want good you tiao. The Dt location is not consistent with their you tiau.
My spot is Yangs fine Chinese cuisine in rhill amazing cheung fun, also they make steamed shrimp dumplings with foie gras,, they are amazing
If you want to try something different but really good and very reasonably priced, go to Tastee House (240 Alton Tower circle). They make soy milk rice rolls there.
