The article quotes Red Robin as the only other full service restaurant in the mall, but Red Robin closed years ago 😅

  3. I am so stealing the term “Dingledale” from this guy’s grandma

Fun article, but missed a good chunk of the story. A huge shame because there is SO much drama to be mined here!

    * The two malls HATE each other, and this is the latest in a long history of them sniping each other’s prized tenants. (Apple Store, Nordstrom) It all started with a dirty move when the Americana was under construction. Galleria got a BS court order for the Americana to stop construction, carefully timed for when they were pouring the concrete foundation, which then improperly cured and had to be jackhammered up and redone.
    * It’s also worth noting that after the Americana sniped Nordstrom, the Galleria embarked on a multi-million dollar renovation project to redo its very dated brown brick interior.
    * Caruso Properties is long rumored to be a nightmare landlord. They’ve previously skimped on duct work for Bourbon Steak, and the HOA for the condo owners have had to sue Caruso for failing to meet building code on multiple occasions
    * This was one of DTF’s first locations in a non-Asian area, and its runaway success took everyone by surprise. The restaurant already expanded into a little used corridor that The Americana was using mostly for residents, and there really is no other place for it to expand. Post-COVID, there is no place for them to do outdoor seating, which has become a mainstay of other locations.
    * Glendale Galleria has been putting in a lot of fast casual Asian food in the last few years, including Kura (conveyor belt sushi), Marugame Udon, and also a mochi donut/sweets place. Most seem to be doing OK.
    * As a final kick out the door, Caruso is replacing DTF at the Americana with rival xiao long bao restaurant Paradise Dynasty (which, by all accounts, is not as good but has several novel dishes DTF does not)

These two malls complement each other really well. People go to Americana to get some fresh air and do fancier shopping, and then go to Galleria to run all their errands and dine on a budget.

This article has so much filler information I feel like it took twice as long to get to the point

    >There was something undeniably democratic about the Galleria

The Galleria and Americana are a great metaphor for our country. One is a exclusive alternative and the other is being championed a democratic ideal. In reality it’s all bourgeois excess that requires people to pay to exist in that space
