Where can I find Svíčková that looks like the plate in this picture in LA?

Svíčková is a Czech meat dish and one of the most popular Czech and Slovak meals. It is sirloin steak prepared with vegetables (carrots, parsley root, celeriac and onion), spiced with black pepper, allspice, bay leaf and thyme, and boiled with double cream. It is generally served with houskové knedlíky (bread dumplings). https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sv%C3%AD%C4%8Dkov%C3%A1

Ahhhh my Czech heart beats faster at the sight of those *knedlíky*! We don’t really have any Czech restaurants here–although we used to, decades ago!! I think the climate here makes it less popular. We’ve had Hungarian restaurants, too, with that somewhat similar Austro-Hungarian cuisine, but they too slowly went out of business. I remember, years ago, taking my Czech dad to the last Hungarian restaurant here (in the location that now has Lal Mirch), and it was full of people in their 30s (as I was then), with their older Slavic parents–presumably from the old country! I think the cuisine is too heavy for this area.

You could try a Polish restaurant [https://polkarestaurant.com/menu/](https://polkarestaurant.com/menu/)

And I’ve been meaning to try this Russian restaurant: [https://www.yelp.com/biz/kalinka-russian-cuisine-glendale-3](https://www.yelp.com/biz/kalinka-russian-cuisine-glendale-3)

Interesting that Glendale seems to have both of these–perhaps the Armenian population missed the cuisine of their near neighbors?

European food outside of Italian and to a degree, Spanish, Greek and French, is fairly hard to find here.

Best case for us from countries with lesser known cuisines if usually just some American food calling itself x-inspired.

My Slovakian friend says she had to learn to cook and bake because she couldn’t find what she is used to eating here. Luckily I am originally from Taiwan and the TW cuisine here is streets ahead that of Europe.

Blu Jam Cafe on Melrose used to have Czech menu items on certain days, but I’m not sure if they still do it.

I wish we had more central European food just for their amazing sauces. So. Good. I went to Czechia and Hungary for my honeymoon, and I swear I gained ten pounds and regretted none of them.
