At a bus stop in Indonesia my son pointed up to a tree and told me to try these little fruits, the ripe one tasted better.

… You picked and ate some random thing growing on the side of the street? Where I’m from that would’ve likely gotten you an expensive hospital bill.

  2. I used to eat these a lot when I was a kid, there’s a tree on the way home walking from school

Lots of tiny seeds inside? Oh gosh the nostalgia… totally forgot about those!

I’ve had this a lot as a child in India! We call it gasgase hannina mara in Kannada

But when it too ripped there would be worms inside

Ah it’s the “fish-roe-fruit” in our language. Pick the ripe ones, they are really sweet and tasty. Used to be my childhood school yard snack. I remember how our school had one tree and all the kids tried to pick fruits from it.

  7. I grew up in one of the suburbs outside of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. We had this plant growing next to the ditch so my dad had to transplant into the yard.

It grew into the biggest cherry tree in the neighborhood! Me and the neighborhood kids used the tree as the headquarters for all of our adventures, we hangout on the tree, played basketball around it with one of the branches as a hoop. We ate the ripe fruits and made rubberband powered guns with the unripe fruits for ammo.

I would hangout on the tree all day during the holidays. It became a landmark in that one tiny Malaysian neighborhood. Then sometime in 2002 there was a big storm and it took the three down and it fell into our fenced yard, luckily nobody was hurt. That was the end of it. Pretty nice tree. I like it.

  8. We call that here in the Philippines ‘seresa’ which I believe is translated to cherry in some languages (e.g. cereza). It’s sweet when it’s ripe and it can go as red as a tomato!

Could you briefly describe what it tasted like? They look like mini tomatoes!
