First time my friend took me to Yakitori in Kyoto he ordered a round of chicken hearts for everyone. At the time I never would have ordered something like that but they were awesome.

My wife and I went to Tokyo.

We just got to our first hotel and she was like, let’s walk to Shibuya, it’s not far on the map. 2 hours walk later we arrived, it was really far, but we loved every second of it.

I found a place online that was supposedly good and as we walkin to it, my wife stopped dead in her tracks and sniffed the air. She said “Oh my god do you smell that? Always follow your nose!” And she took off.

When we reached the source, is was an izakaya, with the kitchen on the ground floor with the window open, grilling yakitori.

We had to go in, so we went up the right steep stairs to where the seating was, just locals and office workers, we sat at a table of smoking salary workers and we stayed there for 3 hours, drinking sake, Sapporo beer, and eating grilled chicken.

One of the best experiences I have ever had.

And we were able to repeat that on almost a nightly basis. Follow your nose in Japan, it’ll always lead you to delicious food.

I miss yakitori, but I REALLY miss yakiniku… they have it here in the US, but its not the same. The level of service in Japan is top notch (and they dont work for tips).

I know the food is bomb but I’m such a chicken about walking into intimate places like this one. I feel like I would need someone who speaks Japanese to be with me.

This just makes me miss Japan more and more, I lived there for a winter and went into Tokyo for a week at a time to just wander and eat. Such a good city for that and there is enough English that you can manage without speaking Japanese.

  9. I’d love to one day visit Japan but unfortunately my body is fit for the nackers yard , I love the food and am slowly building up a good base of Japanese ingredients.
My daughter loves red miso ramen with chicken wings and yakatori .
Considering she has severe autism it was a huge thing for her to try the ramen as she Normally only eats a very restrictive diet.
One evening myself and my lad were have ramen and yakatoti chicken , daughter was eyeing up my bowl and liberated one of the soy eggs , munched that then grabbed a bit of the topping. Following week when we did similar meal she had an egg on her plate and a little bowl plus 2 skewers . Since then shes asked weekly for it. She wasn’t to impressed with the 7 gods pickle though , that got thrown back at me lol.
    Slowly but positive steps 😉
