Is that silver leaf? And what is it made of?

I’ve never had this. Wandered by some stores in Vietnam with stains on the pavement out front and old ladies just constantly chewing something but nobody ever offered me some. What’s it like?

Not really food though… It’s a mixture of herbs and betel nut to produce a stimulating high.

    Street drugs.

  4. Do you chew the silver part too or…?

    Also this is super carcinogenic.

It looks like the Bangladeshi flag

Paan is terrible for your dental hygiene, its also the reason why there are red splatters all over the citties in India. Pan is not really edible, you chew on it to release its juices and then you spit it out. And in India, people kinda just spit it wherever they want to.

This is the equivalent of chewing tobacco right?

  8. People in the comment section are TERRIBLY misinformed. OP has said it doesn’t have tobacco. That would mean it is a sweet paan, with the only thing to “spit out” would be chewed up betel nut which doesn’t stain red. Betel nut is used for its digestive and laxative properties, and is not added in quantity enough to give a high. Paan used for high has tobacco added to it.

Also it can be considered food, given that its a staple digestive accompanying meals in many parts of India.

So with the sweet paan, do you just chew on it and swallow the juices and discard it when you are done? Does the betel leaf also give you some of the stimulant effects you would normally get from the nut?
