Steak house quality at home – Not the first thing you think of when it comes to budget but compared to restaurant prices this is a bargain to do it at home!

While we’re budget aware, there are moments where it’s important to splurge on a meal. Maybe you and your partner need a date night but can’t afford that luxurious restaurant experience. Splurge on the protein – found these for $9.99/lb. With cast iron you can make that steak house quality steak with the nice sear and not break the bank going to a restaurant.

Very simple dinner. Had some leftover steak from Mother’s Day that were in the fridge. Did these on the fly from thinking about what to have for dinner until we ate took 30 min total – with more time needed for the frozen french fries than the steak itself.

I used salt, pepper and garlic powder generously applied to both sides. While those sat for a bit I got my skillet ripping hot. When I saw a little bit of smoke rolling off the pan, I added 2 TBS of butter and let that melt completely then put the steaks in the skillet – 2 min per side and 3 total flips for a total cook time of 8 min. Let them rest for about 5 min or so until the fries were done.

They weren’t cooked with as much TLC as I normally do (no whole garlic cloves or fresh rosemary) but it worked out well in a rush. Actually with the cast iron it’s very simple to make a steak house quality dinner…sans the french fries of course!

i fully believe in the idea of splurging every now and then when the opportunity presents itself. it makes one feel that much more human, i think. and as for steak, heck yeah – i always stock up when petite sirloins go on sale, which is rarer these days than before the plague, but still, they crop up every now and again as bogo or sometimes buy one get two (or three!) free. when it’s b1g2 (or g3) i can usually get between 15 to 20 lil’ sirloins for about $30, which is a lot to pay upfront but it’s nice to have a frozen cache o’ steak! and you are correct, a cast iron pan is absolutely the move. yum!

    I agree!

I’ve noticed that steaks go on sale around Valentine’s Day and Christmas, so I always keep an eye out.

The standing rib roasts are sometimes the only thing on sale, but the butcher in the meat dept. will cut them into steaks for you.
