Finally got around to trying Daybird. We ordered the Sando (Mild, Medium, Hot) as well as tenders in extreme and fries. I thought sando was both better and worse than expected. On the positive side, the first few initial bites of just chicken were amazing. The fry was crisp, the chicken was super moist and the initial flavor was great. It was tasty without being too oily and heavy. When I got to the bread I thought the slaw was pretty unique and complemented the flavors of the chicken well. While I enjoyed eating the sandwich, I felt I was missing something after. I did not get much mala flavor nor any tingling from the szechuan spices. It felt like you got that initial taste but it lacked the depth of flavors you would expect to get after.

For the tenders I thought it was kind of basic and slightly dry, especially compared to the sando. Would definitely not order again. The fries were average as well. Price wise each Sando was $16, fries and tender $4 each and Daybird sauce was $1. We ordered through Doordash for pickup as was not sure how busy it would be.

In terms of spice level, we thought it was a lot less spicy than expected. For reference my gf likes medium and I like X-Hot at Howlin’ Ray’s. The hot spice at Daybird level felt like mild at Howlin’ and the extreme felt between medium and hot. The mild / medium spice levels at Daybird did not seem spicy in any way. Compared to Dave’s, the extreme felt like Reaper when they don’t season much but with much better flavor.

Overall I’m glad I tried Daybird but would probably make the extra 10 minute drive to get Howlin’ Ray’s instead. It is a unique take on the chicken sandwich but did not give me the satisfaction that I get from Howlin’. I would probably take Daybird over the rest of the chicken sandwich options though.

I love it. I love Howlin too. They scratch two desires for me. Daybird is a different kind of spicy, not Nashville Hot. It’s nice to have another version of it. I think of them more as brother and sister.

Daybird is definitely easier for avoiding food coma if you eat the full sandwich, if I had to get one for lunch hour and then work. It’s a bit lighter / not as heavy. I still don’t walk away hungry, but I def don’t need a coffee / redbull after HRs if i eat most of the sandwich.

  3. I had this again last week. Chicken was good, but the slaw was so wet that it turned the bun to mush….

what makes it Szechuan? does it have the “mala” flavoring?

It looks good just by looking at it

Strangely enough, the popcorn chicken sandwich has a more mala hot flavor than the Szechuan chicken sandwich. More numbing spices? Definitely didn’t hate it!

One of my favorite chicken sandos. I only wish they went harder on the spices and shredded their slaw a bit finer.
