I run a site where I’ve catalogued a bunch of diners across Manhattan, and I’m currently going around and writing reviews for a bunch of them.
I did one for The Mansion, which is this kind of ritzy diner on the Upper East Side. I know that there are conflicting views on it, but I found it relatively charming, and the food to be pretty good, even if it was a tad pricey.
If you live in the area, I’d suggest visiting it even just once. It’s in the Yorkville area, which is a nice spot near the East River, and if you want, you could even stop by Gracie Mansion, the residence of the Mayor of New York, before or after your meal.
I hope you’re having a good evening, and if you’d like, the review is linked below. Take care!

This was also the diner they used in *Only Murders in the Building*
Your diner review site is fun!!!
Oh! I love diners. This is a great site!!
I love the design of your site!
Well-written, and surprisingly captivating! Will read more. Transported me to a cozy place.
Will def bookmark. Do you pay for your food? Make yourself known and you dine incognito?
I used to eat there frequently but it’s just not worth the price point anymore, sadly.
Thanks, James, for taking on this noble project! Have bookmarked your site, and look forwarding to read more.
I LOVE diners!
My personal ranking of UES diners:
– Gracie Mews
– The Mansion
– Green Kitchen
– 3 Decker
– Gracie’s Corner Diner
Not ranked (either I haven’t been or I’ve only been once a long time ago): Cafe Luka, Midnight Express, EJ’s luncheonette.
love your writing and photos! In both your op and review, you mention the mansion is a little pricey, would it be a good idea to include the price of the dish in your review?
i live in the nabe, is it possible you’re soft selling prices at the mansion? let’s say one ordered your irish breakfast and added a cup of coffee, tip and tax, i’m guessing it’s > $30?
am i better off ordering their 1/2 murrays roast chicken with stuffing for $32 or walking a couple blocks to cafe d’alsace where for $34 they offer Pan roasted free-range chicken, haricot vert, snap peas, carrots, Yukon Gold mashed potatoes, chicken jus?
you can’t walk a block in the neighborhood without hitting an Italian restaurant, better off paying $26 at the mansion for pasta bolognese or $22.50 at arturos italian restaurant for their rigatoni bolognese? or how about paying $2 more at uva for their homemade pasta ribbons sautéed with ragout of veal and montasio cheese?
personally, I think the mansion serves a purpose but imo, considering it’s average to better than average diner food, it lands somewhere between expensive for a diner and a ripoff, a good fit if you are an undemanding, wealthy UESer but not the sort of place I’d recommend to members of this subreddit.
wait i’ve been thinking about trying some more old school diners for the past month & was looking for some places—this site is great!! can’t wait to try some of these :’) (my one comment is that i’d love some non-manhattan ones too!! i’ve heard abt various diners in BK & was meant to check out court sq diner in LIC next, so outer borough reviews would be appreciated as well)
TAD pricey? They charged $8 for an avocado I ordered for my 1 year old daughter. They can kick rocks
I grew up across the street from Mansion. Many happy memories there and the food is great!
