There was just a thread with this recipe so I made it. I used a smaller pan (7×11) so it wouldn’t be as thin. That added 15 minutes to baking time. I wish I had lowered the temp to 325F because of using a glass pan so the edges wouldn’t be as dark.
I didn’t have buttermilk so I used acidulated milk (remove 2 tsp milk and add 2 tsp white vinegar, stir and let sit while you prepare the other ingredients.
I added 1/2 tsp vanilla. I keep whole nutmeg, so I used freshly grated. I also added a few tbsp of chopped untasted pecans and they toasted nicely while it baked, no burning.
So it was a nice basic coffee cake, no muss no fuss. Simple ingredients and comes together quickly.

this is underrated
This looks great, I love that you made it right away. I saw the recipe earlier too and thought I’d try it if I had the ingredients but I’m out of mostly all of them haha.
I wonder how much of a difference your modifications made to the texture and flavor those who’ve grown up eating it would expect.
Great job! The interior looks spot on. The original did not have nuts though. So this is a fancy version! 🙂
What grades is this served to? Is it a dessert or for breakfast?
We keep buttermilk on hand for this recipe and homemade biscuits and pancakes/waffles.
We make this recipe at least once per month. Mmmmmm
My mom used to make that. It’s delicious!
Should start sellinn..
Where did you happen to get the recipe? Is it the real recipe?
Nice!! Love this recipe, so easy and so yummy.
There are better recipes online. I made this recently and was very disappointed giving the online ravings about it.
