Wood chips make a great organic mulch in the garden, but there’s a risk that they steal nitrogen from the plants if you’re not careful with depth of planting.

  1. I appreciate your efforts to keep everything as natural as possible. After all the hard work by you and your family, why experiment and risk diminished results? Why can't you simply buy a few bags of commercial fertilizer and sprinkle it as needed?

  2. Too bad you didn’t update folks on the wildfire effects where you are. Lots of viewers seemed very concerned for you.

  3. the term carbon is kind of a misnomer here in this case. Carbon would be the end point of complex organic material breakdown which in soil science terms results in organic matter. The key is that there is no further breakdown to achieve. Any complex carbon containing plant residue will be acted upon by various bacteria and fungi, the demand of energy in form of nitrogen compounds is very high to this process and you cannot elect to not feed those microorganisms. They are going to get their needs, no question of it. The only control you have is in the amount of complex carbon containing waste you apply to the growing area.

  4. AvE recently did a video about harvesting garlic scapes. He says to pinch the scapes toward the base at a joint until you hear/feel it pop, then pull them out of the leaf tunnel. I haven't tried it, but he says the pale scapes down deep are super flavorful and excellent for cooking and salads.

  5. Garden looks beautiful Shawn . Went through a tornado Scary rain lots flooding going to lots of work cleaning 3 days of storms . Happy to see ur garden congratulations hello Cali 🐾🐾🫢🏼 loves you all .

  6. True back to eden starts out as composted chicken yard stuff topped with sifted aged wood chips. Back To Eden channel has a video on that.

  7. I have started my peppers in pots Shawn, and they are doing great! However, I have to agree with you on the mulch in soil. I have tried creating a mix with the bagged raised bed soil with coco coir & perlite and my radishes and kohlrabi hardly even sprouted. Then, there are those slugs with all the rain we have had here in central VT. Your gardens look so vital and happy! Looking forward to seeing what you produce this season. Been following you for the past few years.

  8. It's hard to believe it's the 4th year. Time drags & flies at the same time somehow. It doesn't seem that long since you were building your other cabin!

  9. Nice garlic scapes….and cabbage! How do you keep those pesky moths off your cruciferous veggies?

  10. Nice to see your garden shawn, I
