This is a quick cheap dinner and kids love it. I totaled the cost and it comes to under 10 dollars for 6 whole open faced burgers. My husband can eat 2 whole burgers, I can eat 1.
Recipe:
1 pound ground beef (I use chuck), 1 pound shredded garlic bologna (ask the deli to cut you off about an inch of bologna, shred it at home), 1/2 pound of American cheese, 1 small jar of pizza sauce, 6 hamburger buns
Preheat oven to 350. Brown ground beef and drain, add shredded bologna, cheese, and pizza sauce and cook til cheese is melted over a low/medium heat and allow to simmer for a few minutes. Open the six buns and place them on a baking sheet, scoop meat and sauce mixture evenly among the 12 bun halves (about 1/2 to 3/4 cup each half) and bake in the oven for a few minutes…I check them after 5 minutes and usually let them bake for another couple minutes. The edges of the buns will become toasty and that’s when I take them out.
This is a great way to stretch out ground beef, or if you want to use up some almost stale hamburger buns laying around. It’s pretty tasty, my kids really enjoy these, and they only take maybe 15 minutes to make. These are a popular comfort food where I live and if you hunt, they’re good with ground venison. Other people in my area like to use Spam instead of the bologna but I found it to be too salty and I didn’t like the texture so tried the garlic bologna and I liked them. You could also use up whatever shredded cheese you might have in your fridge instead of the American cheese; I’ve used cheddar, Colby jack, and provolone in the past because that’s what I had on hand.
