I've not had a lot of luck starting from seed in the non-rebel way, so I'm giving some of your rebel method a go, as I am also in North Texas. Happy birthday to Greg's mom!
I am a farmer here in South Carolina zone 8b. Right now is the time to start fall seedlings, so you are right on schedule, my dear. It is very difficult to start broccoli and cauliflower outside this time of year, especially if you are not growing the correct varieties. Calabrese and Waltham both produce like crap in the south and I do not recommend growing those varieties. The best varieties of broccoli for a southern fall garden are Belstar, Marathon, and Castle Dome. The best cauliflower for a fall southern garden is Song TJS-65.
You are probably going to have problems with your broccoli and cauliflower seedlings stretching from the heat. It is pretty much unavoidable if you do it outside without a misting system that goes off every few hours to keep the ambient temperature lower, coupled with 60% shade cloth. I start half my broccoli/cauliflower outside in such a system and the other half inside under a professional grow light system.
My pumpkins are already starting to turn orange, which is right on schedule. Yours will be lucky to make by mid-Nov. judging from the size. Always plant Pumpkins in the middle of June to end of June if you want them for Halloween. I have a quarter acre of pumpkins going and it has been a bumper crop this year. I think I have about 200 sellable pumpkins. Yeehaw!
Hi Jill, I'm also in north Texas & struggling in the 106+ degree heat as I tear through my current jungle of overgrown garden to make a fall space. I've started about a dozen varieties (1-3 seeds each) indoors in the hope of planting outside in mid to late Aug. I'll start my brassicas & cruciferous veggies seeds next weekend to plant outside around the 2 weeks of Sept. Best of luck in this heat, thanks for the videos & recipes.
I feel so bad!! I missed church today , but I guess my allergies and the heat are getting to me. Sore throat, scratchy voice, just yuk feeling. No temp, so I'm pretty much drinking water and staying in bed!! I'm taking my goldenrod tincture, seems to make sore throat better!! It tastes terrible, but if it helps, I'll handle the taste!! I hate to feel bad!!! I think the heat has just worn me down and pulled allergies up. Love your videos. Prayers for rain.. no deluge. I'm telling you, they are messing with weather patterns!! They need to let nature be!! It's Scary that they are able to do this, but they can and they do. Shame on them. They will be punished. I've never seen such corruption!! And no one is doing anything about it. That's very troubling!! Stay cool and hydrated. Much love. God bless!!❤
Have you ever watched a young man named Nick here on YT, i think his channels name is "Growing back to eden"…or something like that. He griws Market gardens, he's a Christian and has been suffering with Lime disease, please keep him in y'all's prayers. .🙏🙏🙏 praying for rain for you!!!🌦🌧🌧🌈
Dallas is about to be 107 & 109 degrees. Is that normal; I don't remember it getting that hot!!! Over here in Longview, it will be 105 most of our days.
I have learned by accident. I have these two large containers under my house roofline and I’ve noticed things grow very well. They’re in the back of the house so they don’t get more than 10 hours. Maybe seven hours of sun my tomatoes are doing great. I have another succession planning of cucumbers. Awesome, I’m done really well in my front yard I have a Month spare tree so things that can grow under the pantry don’t get full sun are doing well onions carrots I just started. I started a bunch of poll green beans against my gate. They’re coming up. I have some cucumbers which I will pop some seeds in today for more. …,(Houston)
Good afternoon! I started fall seeds today. Im in Texas also. Zone 7b. I feel like there is plenty of time before a hard frost. I pray for rain and cooler weather too!
I see my soil in my black and my metal water troughs getting hot. Even my totes are getting hot. The metal trough, totes, and my self watering containers are in shades they are getting hot in this heat.
Hi, my sister Jill that heat just not letting up and neither will you and Greg. Happy 90th Birthday to Greg's mama. 🎂🎈oh!!! no, my Okra are struggling…keeping the faith because I know that this too shall pass. I see that the tomatoes in the high tunnel are showing a potential harvest. The herbs are just thriving how impressive. Green beans are one of my favorites. I am on my knees for you and Greg and all homesteaders out there battling the heat. Love you and "Keep your eyes of God" for He sustains you. Enjoy church for this is the day that the Lord has made. "It Is Well With My Soul" amen 🙏❤
I'm a bit of a rebel gardener also. We're in sw VA mountains and just planted second crop of potatoes, just started seeds. I do what works for us, is it always perfect or successful? No, but it is many times. The weather is changing so much that – just talking for us – we have broken a lot of "rules" successfully. And a tip we use_ this year, I thought if it works in my closets the same principal may work in the garden =- and that was to spread cedar chips like you use for your hamster cage, around the base of squash and i haven't had any problems. hope this helps someone, lets all keep praying for one another.
7B Also North Texas I got a late start on peppers, they're all blooming now. Indeterminate tomatoes were pruned back heavily 3 weeks ago – new growth is coming along well. I keep watering, fertilizing and praying. I'm planning to start some fall seeds indoors next weekend
Hey just saw a post and thought of y’all!! I know y’all have a ton of deep cracks in your soil. This person said her daughter dropped every pit from the fruit she way eating at the time and come next season she had fruit trees everywhere!! Figure if you got some extra space it couldn’t hurt
With this Texas heat and rabbits, we broke down and covered out gardens with 30% shade cloth and electric fence netting, and as usual, we irrigated with drip hoses on every row. It worked. Our garden flourished this year in spite of the heat. It’s been tough in Texas for us gardeners but when there’s a will, there’s a way. God bless ya hun. I know it’s been tough but you are tenacious! Hang in there!
I'm in SeTx and the tomatoes won't bloom despite looking healthy. The pest of all kinds have came a destroyed everything else even though we spray Neem oil. We haven't had rain here since May so the ground is like powder.
Hey Jill it's amazing that yawl are able to keep anything alive. Our seed starts are in our mud room by the window and doing great. Agree about seed starting times, we are still starting seeds. They could bolt with the heat. I'll do a quick video on what we are doing. Praying for weather change. Tell Greg and Pops we said hi. God bless

tips his hat
I just planted cucumbers in my backyard raised bed. I’m about 25 miles south of Dallas and yes, it’s hot and dry 🥵 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Got a great rabbit recipe
Nope…it's all broiled.
Why grow so much with just two people to eat. Plenty to pack away but not that much. Cut your water bill.

Gardening can be so hit or miss. Good for you for not giving up, especially with the heat.

I don't know why where you at the temps are higher than where i am at and it's south . In the middle 90 they predict. God lord have mercy on us .

A beautiful, cool morning here in the Northern Rockies. Had to use a comforter last night again. God bless those of you struggling with the heat.
