Got recommended Chiefs on this sub yday as a cheap & cheerful local option. My review:
We got a:
•1-meat plate (pork ribs) with slaw & fried ocra. Ribs were good, ocra was good. Portions were huge.
•2-meat plate (brisket & Elgin sausage). Sausage was great, the best meat. Brisket was bad- v.dry. Disclaimer that I went late in the day, & I’d been warned it’s dry, but you still always have to try a bbq place’s brisket, it’s the law. 2-meat plate came with 3 sides. Fries, onion rings and pinto beans. They were out of the beer battered fries unfortunately. The fries & rings were exactly as you hope, good trashy food. The beans were legitimately delicious with a really thick consistency- actually the tastiest thing besides the Elgin.
Finally, the TX toast, which I usually find dry & pointless, was heavily buttered before toasting, which made it delicious. I don’t know why other places don’t do this.
Came to $42 with a drink to share, so $50 all told after tip. I am writing this at lunchtime the next day and I’m still completely stuffed, and there’s an entire to-go box of food to eat, so for that price I’d say you get 3 full meals.
All the commenters from yday were correct. You don’t go here for fancy bbq, you go here for good cheap eatin’. 8/10. Just skip the brisket.

Just curious, is this run/owned by the same people than ran the place that was in that spot before, in the 90s, called Big Chic?
I’ve been eating at Chief’s for years. They are remarkably consistent. Including the part where the brisket is dryer the later you go. Sliced brisket sandwich for lunch is great. It’s terrible for dinner.
They’ve also catered several events I’ve been a part of and everything is always tasty, even the brisket.
Their sliced brisket might be the worst I’ve had from a restaurant but you should probably stick to sandwiches there anyway.
looks super dry and the frozen french fries, onion, rings and okra not impressed. Why do that to yourself when there is a plethora of amazing BBQ places in and around Austin
They have been terrible for decades.
Thanks for sharing! Good write up. Now I remember how I like dipping my okra and sausage into their sauce cups.
They do ‘chopped’ brisket well but I think chopped brisket is typically sauced after cut and dryness is not such a factor. The chopped comes on their signature sandwich ‘The Homer’.
$50 for that!?!?!? That’s crazy. Tiny portions. If I pay 21 for a plate I don’t want it to comfortably fit on a Styrofoam plate.
