It’s looking really sad out there, folks,
Randall’s advertised their yearly bait [and switch] free roasting at a few locations up north last week, but when I called corporate and my local store this week they both went, “Uh….” and then my phone must have broken after 10 minutes on each call because I just heard dial tones. Huh.
If you look on their website, [you’ll see this](https://imgur.com/CJlsfcY). Hmm, they don’t look roasted to me! And if you go to their store on Wednesday (their Ad day) [you’ll see this](https://imgur.com/rgvhhhY), Note the bottom of the display collecting all those cloudy green drippings exhibiting their superb ripeness.
HEB stores near me are all OOS, but otherwise $2/lb while Randall’s and Hole Foods advertise $.99/lb. Trader Joe’s are $3.50/lb in pre-packs of 2lbs.
Central Market has finally come down in price to match the $.99 of other stores after 5 years of sharing the record high prices in Austin with HEB. But now CM is charging $5/lb for roasted when last year they were $2.78. Yeah, F-that. And if HEB is roasting anything this year, it’s customers – not chiles.
Anybody know of any places roasting chiles this weekend? It used to be a sack of 25lbs roasted for free. But now even the pickings on fresh chiles looks pretty grim 3 weeks into the season already.

Looks like there’s a big shortage. You can thank climate change… How you vote matters, especially when it comes to seasonal chiles.

I got my Hatch Green Chile shampoo and conditioner coming
99 cents a lb at Central Market last weekend. Bought a bunch and I throw them on the gas grill while I cook turkey burgers or chicken thighs. Let them steam covered for a few minutes after charring and it’s easy to peel.
Just get some Anaheims
Is no one going to mention the zucchini on the website instead of Chiles
Roasting peppers at home is not very hard to do.
All H‑E‑B should be roasting this weekend this is the last weekend of hatch roasting call your local store
I work at an HEB that doesn’t have a roaster, but I’ve heard from other stores that the heat is preventing many roasting shifts from being scheduled, as it’s a health hazard at this point. Additionally, HEB just isn’t putting as much effort into Hatch Fest, sales have fallen pretty flat for the category and people aren’t as excited about it anymore.
That being said, I just roasted some in my air fryer.
Randall’s at Braker and Research was roasting today. Felt bad for the guy…
