Still living up to the hype. This is a classic godmother with everything. So good!

My personal favorite in LA. Almost worth the drive from Atwater Village. Almost….

Here are some of the problems with this sandwich-
    1) Bread crust is too chewy
    2) Cold cuts sliced too thick
    3) Lettuce and giardinera are too wet
    4) No oil & vinegar dressing, it’s not even an option here
    5) Has Mayonnaise (wtf? On an Italian hoagie?)
    6) Coldcuts aren’t anything to write home about, just your basic stuff

The wet, soggy filling and the hard, shoe-leather roll combine in a way that make it impossible to get a good bite-the filling shoots out of the opposite end with every attempt

Meatball and chicken parm subs are the standouts here, Godmother is just a soggy mess on a hard roll.

If you love this but can’t get to Santa Monica, All About The Bread on Melrose has one called The Godfather that’s pretty good too. Nothing beats the original but it’s like Claritin D when you need Adderall – it’s not a replacement but it will get you by.

I don’t get why people hype Bay Cities. Go to a town where there is a real Italian American population and eat literally anything there and it will be better.

The best! Their caprese sandwich is my favorite!

Bread is so tough and leathery every bite just squeezes all the contents out. Not worth the hype.

Sorry haters, this is a great sandwich!!

  8. turtleslover

By East Coast standards this is not a good sandwich

Ghost Sando Shop shits on this place, not even comparable :/

I still appreciate Bay cities due to the nostalgia, but Ghost Sando makes a much better Italian – and better sandwiches overall

I like the bread but the turnoff is yellow mustard on an Italian sandwich. V&O or even just pepper relish w/salt & pepper. I dunno.

Also they have cold sandwiches already pre made at the checkout so you don’t need to wait or deal w/anyone

That place is so good. Their hot bar has amazing lasagna and eggplant parm. Just be aware: cash only, only outdoor seating and no bathrooms.

Had to get jaw replacement surgery after this

    Great sandwich….tasty…..messy!

My go.to is the Caprese and add DiParma Prosciutto….with a couple Pepper Shooters on the side

They carry a lot of great Italian wines and a nice selection of amaro

Love Bay Cities – thanks for posting!

Number 1 sandwhich in L.A. (although not technically L.A.).

If you like sandwiches, I also recommend Ghost Sando Shop on Melrose. One of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had

  17. etherlore

Is there anything similar in the valley? I miss bay cities..

  18. Fornucopia

I love Bay Cities but over time, chewing on that bread becomes a real war.

  19. No_Sea_9347

Just saw that post. I live down the street from there in Santa Monica. The God Mother is a classic.

  20. paddlelegends

It’s a great sandwich. Make sure you try the Spaniard too, it’s to die for.

  21. printerdsw1968

Is it the best I’ve ever had? No, but my favorite sandwich of all time is from a place that no longer exists. Is it really good? Yes. And is it reliable? Probably one of the surest bets in LA county.

  22. There_is_no_selfie

One of the best. Gotta be sure your teeth are up for the bread!

  23. Mingilicious

Fuck. Now I want one, and they aren’t open until Wednesday. Thanks, OP! 😆

  24. OatmealCookiesRock

Damn. That’s my favorite sandwich in the west side.

  25. MADEINJOSEPH

The best sandwich on earth. With a side of vinaigrette for dipping.

  26. LA_Photographer123

The quintessential sandwich in LA. It should just be known as “The Sandwich” to all Angelenos 😍
