I recently took a trip to Fort Worth and visited a really cool Japanese restaurant (Takara) and it had half the restaurant with regular tables and half the restaurant was a raised floor so you could sit “on the floor” while you eat. The food is really good as well. I had a good Ramen bowl and my kids had Bento Boxes, I’m not sure if that’s a common Japanese type meal though. Long story short, do we have anything like that in/around Austin?

I think people think I’m talking about the old cliche’ rooms you see in movies, but this was different. [Here’s a picture I took inside the resturant.](https://imgur.com/a/ZYrHgVF) I tested the link in a separate browser and a N S F W warning came up. I have no idea why. Unless making you hungry is N S F W. It’s perfectly safe.

Don’t know anywhere in town with tatami mats, but Kome has all the food you’re describing.

Not sure if it is good or meets your requirements, Miyo has a Japanese menu.

  3. I think those rooms are mostly a thing of the past–when Japanese food was seen as more foreign and only for specialty dining.

“Bento box” meals are pretty standard for any restaurant that does both sushi and hot kitchen.

May not be the same, but Fukumoko is an amazing Japanese restaurant that I’ve never encountered before – “an izakaya, a Japanese restaurant specializing in yakitori (skewers grilled over Japanese charcoal), sushi/sashimi, and classic Japanese comfort food”. Great location on the east side and absolutely delicious. They even import their charcoal from Japan.

Again, not necessarily what you mentioned style-wise but I’ve heard it’s about as authentic a izakaya you can find outside of Japan (or maybe Houston).

I found it because they only take call in reservations, which means they usually have a table since no one wants to actually call a place. It was for a last minute Saturday night date. I’ve been back a number of times and am always blown away.

Miso, in Round Rock offers Japanese and Korean.

The food is very nice but the store is smaller. Avoid it during the peak dinner period unless you’re OK waiting.

Odaku sushi has seating like you describe, it’s up north near the H‑E‑B at Parmer and Mopac
