I’ve recently came across my grandma’s pressure canner. She passed away 20 years ago and it has since been unused. I’ve attached some pictures. Does this canner look safe to use? Has it been sitting for too long? If it would be safe, are there any tips anyone can give me? I just purchased the ball book of preserving so I have some tested recipes I’m wanting to try. Thanks in advance.

If the bottom is still flat, and there are no cracks in the canner, I’d replace the lid gasket, and the automatic air vent. Can you tell us what the make and model is? That might be on the lid someplace.

  3. Have you replaced the pressure gauge? It is unlikely to be safe if the gauge has not been calibrated and/or replaced. Your County Extension office may be able to test it for you.

  4. You’ll need a new gasket.

Set the lid on a flat surface and make sure it isn’t warped. Same with the pot.

If it’s all straight then enjoy your new canner.

I have that same canner. It’s great. Just buy a new seal. Maybe a new blow out stopper thing… i can’t remember what it’s called!.

Awesome! I hope it serves you well. I have one almost exactly like it and we’re using it to can apple sauce, tomatoes, spiced apples, and pears currently.
