Has Tacos Villa Corona gone downhill in recent years?
Stopped by for the first time in years this morning and both the papas and chilaquiles burritos were extremely dry. Maybe adding spinach is that much of a difference maker, I didn’t do that this time.

Sadly, yes. Nowadays you can get a much better breakfast burrito at El Sauz up on Chevy Chase and San Fernando.

has been bad for a while. I went there about 5 years ago as part of a taco crawl and it was not good.

Still tastes great to me. Could see it being inconsistent though.

I seriously don’t understand the hype of Tacos Villa Corona. Mexican-American Angeleno here, this taco stand is Mediocre in my opinion. I think the hype came from Anthony Bourdain back in the day or social media hype.

I still like it and don’t think the quality has changed much, but honestly I think there’s a limited amount of great things on the menu. For me, I get the steak chilaquiles burrito and anytime I deviate too much I’m a bit bummed.

I think it’s become much more efficient but also inconsistent, probably for that very reason. They have more staff working behind the counter, they’re faster at doing orders and don’t run out of supplies (that used to happen a lot). But the last two burritos I had from them were an A and a B-.

I think it has, yeah. I got a burrito from there the other day and I’m pretty sure there was zero seasoning on the chicken. Really lacked flavor. I usually used to go for the breakfast burritos, though.

I’ve been going there since the late 90s and I lived in that hood in the mid 2000s and swore by them. A great place you could walk to and very cheap.
But the last couple of times it’s been underwhelming. The prices are still amazing and it’s a scene there, so worth a visit. I go to other spots in the hood when I want something really tasty.
I could not be happier that they’re always slammed. Good for them. They deserve it.

The salsa is still good. The potatoes are less crispy, the cheese is less flavor full. I loved it 15 years ago, it was the best hangover cure. It is now pretty bland

Yep. Unfortunately. Used to visit a buddy over in Atwater years back and we’d eat there once a week. Solid. Stopped going as much once the hipsters found it and went last year, waited forever for our burritos and didn’t even finish them. I’ve never not finished a breakfast burrito. Ever.

I haven’t been there in, oh, 15 years. Sad it has gone downhill, as I used to like it.

That food looks sad…

When Maria, the co-owner and real head of that business, died in 2019 from longtime health stuff, Villa Corona started to go downhill. It is now run by the sister/brother who know all their mother’s tricks so I don’t get it. But the love is gone. It’s a damn shame. I used to love that place and their incredible hot sauce.

After the Bourdain hype, it was good. Solid. Not “stop all wars” amazing. And they tacked on a couple bucks more after the free plug.
But this is depressingly bad. I can’t even recognize it.

Ok, after reading this post last night, I decided to finally stop on my way into work (I literally drive by TVC on my commute).
IMHO the burrito is still absolutely fine (papas bacon). The thing I was most shocked about … it’s the *same price*.

I think it’s still a solid neighborhood breakfast burrito joint that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to feed yourself and the family… But, I agree with the sentiments their burritos aren’t top-tier
