Relative gave me a few cans of jam they made for Christmas. I’ve been avoiding eating it mostly because I have no idea how to open it. The preservation method they used has a layer of hard glue over the jam and I have no idea how to remove it. It fits too well to the jar so I can’t slide it off and when I try to break it bits of glue fall into the jam. The last jar I opened I managed to eat most of it just by tipping the sides up a bit and sliding my knife in the crack but it was such a pain in the butt and I barely got any jam using this method. I’ve never seen this preservation method before and have no idea how I’m supposed to eat this. This is probably a dumb question but thanks for the advice!

This is the absolute weirdest sealing method I’ve ever seen. Glue?! Wow.

Caveat emptor, but personally I would not be eating that because it didn’t follow a safe recipe/process. I would scrape everything out, toss it, wash the jar, and tell the person it was delicious. No need to explain to them you dumped it and why.

Paraffin wax, perhaps? You can buy it by the block at the grocery store for sealing preserves like this.

Scrape it off with a spoon and discard. Enjoy the jam!

If it is wax, put it in the fridge. The wax will harden, and then you can run a knife along the edge and pop the wax layer out, hopefully as a disk or at least in large shards.

    Good luck!

Wax probably. Pop the top off, dig the wax out, enjoy jam. Don’t go mental if a speck of wax falls in and gets lost. It won’t kill you, and you probably already eat a lot of wax anyway.
